Why Your Dryer Takes Too Long:Checks Before You Replace It
A slow laundry day can start with wet washing, an unsuitable programme or overdue maintenance. Work through the checks your model allows, then decide whether you need a repair or a dryer that better fits your routine.

Before ordering a replacement, establish what the existing dryer is failing to do. Does it leave clothes damp, take longer than it used to, or dry everything properly but leave the next load waiting?
Those observations lead to different decisions. A persistent change in performance needs investigation. A machine that meets its instructions but cannot finish your usual washing within the available time gives you a specific requirement for the next purchase.
Find the model number and its Australian user manual first. Use the checks below to organise your observations, with the manual setting the limits for cleaning, loading and installation.
Establish what has changed
Start with a load you recognise. Record the textiles, programme and dryness setting, then compare them with the conditions under which the machine previously worked well. A heavier towel load or a different washing-machine spin programme makes an old cycle time a poor benchmark.
Separate elapsed time from the countdown. Bosch's tumble-dryer manual 9001287797_B explains that its remaining-time display can change as the machine recognises the load. On a model with that behaviour, a revised estimate alone does not establish a fault.1
Also separate a long cycle from an incomplete result. If the dryer ends but thick seams or bundled items remain damp, include the extra drying and handling in your record. That is the time your household spends waiting for usable laundry.
If the dryer has always seemed slow, check what technology you bought. Electrolux explains that heat-pump dryers operate at lower temperatures and can take longer than condenser or vented dryers with higher energy consumption. That explanation does not tell you whether a particular model is working correctly, or how quickly another will handle your load.2
Check the washing before it reaches the dryer
Look at the starting condition of the washing. Energy Rating Australia recommends a high spin cycle when clothes go directly from the washer to the dryer.3 Use only a spin setting suitable for the fabric and washing programme.
If the clothes are unusually wet, investigate what changed in the wash before paying for another dryer. An extra spin may be appropriate where the washing machine's instructions and garment care labels allow it. Record that change so you can distinguish its effect from anything you alter on the dryer.
Consider the whole laundry sequence when changing load sizes. Dividing one crowded load may improve the result of each run, but two consecutive runs can still occupy more of the afternoon. Judge the proposed fix against the washing you need to finish.
Match the load to the programme
Check the programme table in your manual, including its permitted load and intended fabrics. Do not assume the capacity printed on the front applies to every programme. Electrolux's guidance notes that loading quantities refer to dry laundry weight and advises sorting mixed thicknesses or fabric types where necessary.2
Give clothes room to tumble and separate tangled items before loading. Avoid using a short programme as a benchmark for a full load unless its instructions support that use.
Choose the dryness level you need. If your usual setting leaves laundry too damp, a permitted adjustment may improve the finish, but it is not evidence that the machine will finish sooner. Include any additional time in the comparison.
Sheets need particular attention when they wrap around other items. Fisher & Paykel's Australian and New Zealand guide for DH1060R5/DH1060RG5 lists tangled items, overloading, unsuitable settings and very wet washing among possible reasons for a long cycle. It also directs owners towards the appropriate item settings.4 Check your own model's equivalent instructions before changing the load or programme.
Your owner-check list
A personal reading aid, not a diagnostic test. Mark a check only after following your own model’s instructions. Your progress stays in this browser.
Follow your model's maintenance instructions
Work through the owner-maintenance section, using its instructions for switching off, disconnecting power and allowing the appliance to cool. Clean and refit the accessible filters as directed. Do not operate the dryer with a filter missing or incorrectly fitted.
A door filter may be only one part of the routine. Your model may also have another filter or an accessible condenser-care procedure. Follow the exact method provided for that machine. A cleaning instruction for one design does not authorise brushing, rinsing or dismantling another.
Bosch's cited manual also identifies deposits on the moisture sensor as a possible reason for poor drying results.1 If your own manual provides a sensor-cleaning procedure, follow it. Keep the investigation within the parts and actions intended for owners; internal electrical and refrigeration work belongs with a qualified service provider.
Replace a damaged or missing filter with the correct part, rather than buying a generic filter because it looks similar. Published Australian parts listings show why model numbers matter:

Check the room and water path
Compare the installation with the manual. Look for objects covering an air intake, unsuitable clearances or an enclosure the manufacturer does not permit. A dryer that does not need external venting still needs an installation that meets its own requirements.
For a machine with a removable water tank, follow its emptying instructions. For a plumbed installation, inspect only the visible, owner-accessible hose arrangement as directed. Note a kink, a crushed hose or a recurring drainage message rather than moving into internal repairs.
The DH1060R5/DH1060RG5 guide identifies a full tank, drainage problems, blocked intake and very hot or cold surroundings as possible contributors to interruptions or prolonged drying. It prohibits operating those models inside a cupboard.4 Other models may have different requirements, so use that example as a reason to open your own installation guide.
Record one useful comparison
After the permitted checks, use a suitable, familiar load and keep a short record. This is a way to make your observations useful to you and a technician, not a diagnostic test that proves which component has failed.
| Record | Include |
|---|---|
| Starting load | Textiles, approximate dry load weight if known, washing programme and spin setting |
| Dryer settings | Exact programme and dryness level |
| Conditions | Room conditions, completed maintenance and any permitted change |
| Time | Start and finish, interruptions and additional drying |
| Result | What was dry, what remained damp, tangling and any error message |
Make your own load record
Personal notes, saved only in this browser. Optional fields. Record observations rather than a diagnosis; nothing is sent to a retailer or service provider.
Change one relevant condition at a time where practical. If you change the spin, load size and programme together, you may get a better result without knowing which change helped.
Do not keep repeating a cycle through a persistent fault or contrary to an instruction to stop. Follow the manual's fault guidance. If performance remains worse under comparable conditions after the owner checks, give the service provider the model number, fault messages and your record.
Decide whether to keep, service or replace
Keep.
Keep using the machine if the permitted adjustments restore a satisfactory result and it still fits your routine. A clean, intact filter needs no replacement merely because you were considering a new dryer.
Service.
Arrange assessment when a performance problem persists. Ask what the diagnosis supports, whether the needed part is available, what the complete repair will cost and when the appliance can return to use. Compare that proposal with the cost and suitability of a replacement, including delivery, installation and removal.
Consider replacement.
If the appliance works satisfactorily but cannot finish your usual loads in the available window, write down that requirement before shopping. Include the fabrics, number of loads, required dryness, acceptable maintenance and available space. Ask for evidence relevant to that workload.
Check your consumer rights first.
Check your consumer rights before assuming the repair must be paid for. The ACCC explains that remedies depend on the failure to meet consumer guarantees and whether the problem is major or minor. The seller is responsible for addressing problems with goods it sells and cannot simply direct a consumer to the manufacturer for a remedy. A disappointing cycle time by itself does not establish an entitlement to a replacement.8
For a price reference, Fisher & Paykel lists its white 7kg DE7060G2 vented dryer at A$599 and its white 8kg DH8060P5 heat-pump dryer at A$1,399. The two use different technologies and have different capacities. Their published dimensions are 830 × 600 × 575mm and 850 × 602 × 682mm respectively, stated as height × width × depth.9 10
Prices were checked on 12 October 2026; confirm postcode availability, delivery, installation and removal costs separately. Those specifications help you check budget and fit. They do not establish which appliance will finish your washing sooner. We have not tested these models, and the sources reviewed do not provide a controlled comparison of their drying times. Energy stars describe efficiency under the label's conditions, not a promised duration for your laundry.3
Take your load record and installation measurements to the retailer. Request the proposed model's programme limits and any comparable performance evidence before paying for a claimed speed improvement.
