Editorial Methodology
Meleus & Mosman publishes research-based editorial guidance. Selects helps Australian readers assess a purchase, compare materials and understand the care, costs and unanswered questions that come with ownership. Justin Meleus, the editor, publishes under a pseudonym and is responsible for editorial decisions and corrections.
How an article takes shape
The editorial process starts with a specific reader question. Recurring concerns in reader discussions, including Reddit and owner-review sites, can help identify that question. They are signals for investigation, rather than proof of a product defect or a reason to recommend a brand.
Research develops the question into a brief with relevant sources, trade-offs and evidence gaps. The draft is reviewed for unsupported conclusions, contradictory information and whether it helps the reader decide. Product examples may explain a construction or a buying risk without constituting a shortlist of recommended products.
Sources and what they can establish
Sources are chosen for the claim being made. The hierarchy is:
- Australian regulators and applicable official guidance for consumer protections and regulatory questions. Technical publications, standards and research are used within their documented scope. General material guidance does not certify a particular product.
- Current Australian manufacturer and retailer documents for the exact offer, model specifications, instructions, care requirements and published warranty terms. A manufacturer is a primary source for its own claims, but those claims are not independent proof of performance.
- Independent tests and specialist reviews for observed performance under stated conditions. The tested model, method, date and any relevant commercial disclosure affect how the findings can be used. Results from incompatible models or test methods are not combined into a ranking.
- Customer reports and discussion forums for questions, experiences and possible failure points worth investigating. These accounts may be unverified, self-selected or incentivised. They do not establish failure rates, typical lifespan or a consensus on their own.
An independent test can carry more weight than marketing for a performance claim. A current model manual is the relevant source for that model’s prescribed care. Search snippets, AI summaries and copied product descriptions are not sufficient support for material claims. When documents conflict, the uncertainty is stated rather than resolved by assumption.
Australian models, prices and availability
Selects prioritises Australian listings and the model or configuration sold here. Overseas findings are identified and used only within the limits of their relevance. A shared product name does not establish identical materials, components, software, accessories or warranty conditions.
Quoted prices are in Australian dollars and carry a check date. The selected size, finish, package and sale conditions matter. Delivery, postcode restrictions, installation, covers, consumables and other additions are considered where relevant and available. A listing or an advertised starting price does not guarantee stock, a delivered total or the price at checkout.
Product selection and comparisons
Products are selected for their relevance to the reader’s decision and the evidence available about them. Criteria can include construction, materials, fit, care requirements, local availability, repair options, replacement parts, published warranty terms and the complete purchase cost.
For outdoor furniture, the whole piece matters: frame, connections, coating, upholstery, drainage, exposure and the routine needed to maintain it. A premium price, coastal collection name or long structural warranty does not establish longer service life or unchanged appearance.
Comparisons explain who an option may suit and what remains to be checked. A product is not penalised merely because information is missing, but an unsupported suitability or durability claim is not made. Buying nothing, repairing an existing item or asking a supplier for clarification can be a useful conclusion. Affiliate commission rates and the availability of a paid link do not determine inclusion, recommendations or any ranking.
Research limits and calculations
The current Selects guides are based on published research, not Meleus & Mosman’s own hands-on product tests. Manufacturer statements, independent test findings, customer accounts and editorial interpretation are distinguished in the article. No showroom visit, personal use, interview or supplier response is implied unless it took place and is described.
Without suitable evidence, the publication does not assign a lifespan, reliability rate or measured performance advantage. Calculations identify their inputs and assumptions. Hypothetical examples are labelled and do not become promises about a reader’s home. Unavailable test results are not treated as if they had been read.
AI assistance
AI tools assist research, writing and design. Claims are checked against sources. Justin Meleus is responsible for publication and corrections.
Images and illustrations
Image captions identify the source or creator where applicable. Manufacturer photography is treated as a depiction of the stated product, not proof of performance. Publication requires appropriate permission or a licence; an image being publicly accessible does not establish that permission.
AI-generated contextual images are labelled “AI-generated illustration.” They illustrate a setting rather than document a real property, product test or personal visit. Technical diagrams and hypothetical layouts retain the assumptions and limits needed to read them accurately. Image provenance and any rights restrictions are recorded in the production handoff.
Updates and corrections
Prices, availability, specifications and policies can change. Articles show a publication date and, when a substantive revision is made, an updated date. A source-check date records when the relevant information was checked, rather than implying continuous monitoring.
Corrections that affect a recommendation, comparison or material factual claim receive a visible note explaining what changed. Routine spelling and formatting fixes do not require a correction notice. Reports of possible errors can be sent through Contact, with the article link, the passage concerned and supporting information. A scheduled review or a guaranteed response time should not be assumed.
Commercial relationships
Meleus & Mosman does not currently receive affiliate commission or other payment for the product links in Selects. Links identify sources or products discussed in the guides. The publication may introduce affiliate links in future and will disclose them when they are used. A public affiliate programme does not mean Meleus & Mosman is an approved partner.
Commercial relationships do not determine product inclusion, recommendations or any ranking. Any paid editorial placement will be labelled “Sponsored” and will identify the paying organisation.
